As owner of Glass Unlimited, Walter Krause has a simple approach to customer service. "We treat everyone like friends and neighbors, which is what they really are,” said Krause, who is being honored as the Westland Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 Westland Business Person of the Year. “I have three employees, all in their 50s or 60s. We’ve done this our whole lives; we have a lot experience. We try to make sure every customer is happy.”
Krause gets some help keeping customers happy from Echo, his 4-year-old cardigan Welsh corgi. “Her job is to greet people. I brought her to work when she was a puppy and she couldn’t stay home. Now she waits at the door (to go to the business). She’s friendly and the customers love her.” A Westland resident since 1958 when he was 5 years old, Krause started his career as a co-op student at Westland John Glenn High School. In 1969, he started working at Al’s Glass doing upholstery.
Over the next three or four years, Krause worked his way up in the business and then went to work for USA Auto Glass, which had been located where Howe Collision is today. That’s just across Wayne Road from the Glass Unlimited location.
